Dearborn's mayor sends a letter to a controversial pastor coming to his town

Dr. Terry Jones has gained noteriety in recent years for his attacks on Islam.   His burning of a Qur'an in his Florida church last fall led to deadly riots in Afghanistan.   Now, he's coming to Dearborn.  Jones plans to hold a rally in front of the Islamic Center of America.

Dearborn mayor John O'Reilly wants Jones to reconsider.  The mayor sent an open letter to Jones today, outlining why he's wrong about Dearborn and Islam.  Here's the letter:
Dear Pastor Jones:

I watched you on television speaking about the Constitution and Dearborn, and it appears you need more information about both before you come to our city.  I can provide insight on the Constitution, and expertise on Dearborn.

First of all, Dearborn supports the Constitution as well as any city in America. Our commitment to the Constitution is unwavering, not merely convenient, which makes your hyperbole about Sharia Law being practiced in the courts or civil law of Dearborn nonsensical. So, you are coming to protest against an imaginary threat that doesn’t exist in our community. Not in our courts, not at our City Hall, not on our streets and not in any of our places of worship.

Still, because we do understand the Constitution here, we are not preventing you from expressing your free speech.  In fact, in Dearborn, we’ve even gone one step farther than most communities in support of free speech. We established, by ordinance, “Permit Free Zones” intended for demonstrations and free speech.

One of those zones is at City Hall, where from my office I have heard manyrallies being conducted in response to international, national or regional issues. This is a high visibility spot, seen by thousands of motorists but safe from traffic, with plenty of public space for protestors, supporters and the media. It is where we are asking you to conduct your demonstration. The steps of City Hall even make an impressive platform for speeches.

And, if you are unhappy with what you think is going on in Dearborn, than what better place to protest than with City Hall as the back drop?

Instead you insist on protesting in an area that has no public property to accommodate crowds, spectators, parking or the media. There is just a small public road with limited access which can’t be blocked and an adjacent grassy area for drainage. It is parallel to a major state road, but the small shoulder can accommodate people only when they have auto emergencies.

And, this property you are focusing on, in front of the Islamic Center of America, is also adjacent to four Christian churches, all of which will be hosting Good Friday services, adding to the traffic flow and congestion. It is ironic that the road that you want to protest near is called Altar Road, so named because it was first constructed to provide access to a row of churches constructed in the 1950s reflecting Dearborn’s diverse faith communities.

But I can understand if you don’t know the details of the site, or the particulars about Dearborn. But you should know about the Constitution that you claim to be defending.

The Constitution says that your rights must be balanced with the rights of others under the same document. Your free speech rights do not allow you to trespass on the private property of others or prevent them from the Constitutional right to freely practice their religion. I am not just talking about Muslims but members of all faiths.

The members of the Christian churches on Altar Road asked me last week if they should cancel their Good Friday services because of your planned visit. I assured them that they should not because the Constitution does not allow you to violate their rights. I don’t know why you selected Good Friday but it wasn’t very considerate of the significant Christian services being held at that time. I assure you that you will not make them forfeit their services.

You claim that you are coming to protest the radicalism of Islam. Like all of America, we are concerned about the radicalization of any religion that would rationalize extreme actions. However we have not let this concern turn into a twisted paranoia that promotes fear-mongering and misleading generalizations.  You state that you are coming to the Islamic Center of America because it is the largest mosque in America. What does that have to do with the radicalism of Islam? While size may matter to you, we prefer to focus on actual behavior. And according to our Police Department and the anti-terrorism agencies they work with, there has never been evidence of any wrongdoing in any of Dearborn’s mosques.

It appears your choice of the Islamic Center of America is not because it has any relationship to the stated object of your free speech but because it symbolizes the Islamic faith in general. If so, that is not truly in line with the Constitution you say you are defending.

There is no Sharia Law in Dearborn, only Constitutional Law. Sharia Law is church- or faith-based law that is applicable only to the followers of that faith. For me it is Cannon Law of Catholicism, in Judaism it is Torah Law, and for Muslims it is Sharia Law. The actual originator of the event you plan to hold in Dearborn, Frank Fiorello of the Fraternal Order of the Dragon, accepted my invitation to learn more about Dearborn, and after seeing the truth, he canceled his protest.

But, if you don’t believe that Dearborn follows the Constitution, here are some realistic facts for you. Businesses in Dearborn lawfully meet the diverse needs of our Greater Detroit area, but if Dearborn practiced Sharia Law, would we have three adult entertainment bars and more alcohol licensed bars and restaurants per capita than most other cities? None of that should be allowed under Sharia Law.

How about this? A business we boast about, the nationally known Dearborn Sausage, opened more than 60 years ago across the street from the first mosque in Dearborn and is famous for its sausages and spiral sliced hams. It is one of many meat packing operations in our City and no one has ever objected.

Dearborn is also famous for The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, where more than 1.5 million visitors come each year from across the country and the world to learn about the foundations of our American way of life.

Dearborn is a diverse, safe and unified City that is addressing its future in a proactive manner. We cherish the American Dream that brought so many people here during the last century to earn a decent wage and enjoy a high quality of life thanks to Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company. And for Dearborn, our success and our identity is tied to welcoming people of all backgrounds who have chosen to make America, and our community, their home.  We are proud to have welcomed them.

As we work hard to balance your rights with the rights of others in Dearborn, you will be extended every courtesy during your visit – as long as you follow the law based on the Constitution’s protection of everyone’s rights. That should be a familiar statement to you.

You have said over and over that “Muslims are welcome as long as they follow the Constitution.” Surely, then, you wouldn’t ask less of yourself

Mich. Cops Can Now Steal Your Cell Phone Data — ‘Without the Owner Knowing’

Posted on April 20, 2011 at 9:28am by Jonathon M. Seidl Jonathon M. Seidl

It’s a scary scenario. You’re driving down the road and get pulled over by a state patrolman. After checking your license and registration, the officer asks for your cell phone, and then uses a futuristic machine to download all your data. In Michigan, it’s happening.

CNet.com reports the Michigan State Police (MSP) are using “extraction devices” to download personal information from motorists’ cell phones, including contacts, videos, GPS data, and pictures, “even if they’re not suspected of any crime.”

“The handheld machines have various interfaces to work with different models and can even bypass security passwords and access some information,” CNet says. The MSP have admitted to owning five of the devices.

Washington mosque: Women are inferior, you can hit them (video)

It looks like there is a new blog on WordPress, with a name many readers will relate to, Not My Prophet. Welcome. This article was cross-posted at NewsReal, Lying, Hitting Your Wife and Jihad: Just Another Day in a Moderate Mosque:

In the small city of Sammamish, WA is an Islamic worship center that most people wouldn’t even recognize as a mosque or anything other than a residential house in just another normal neighborhood.  But what is being taught about Islam at the Sammamish Mosque should be brought to attention, not just in this small community, but on the national stage.

When I decided to research this mosque I was ready to find the ordinary and mundane, although as a self-taught student of Islam, I was prepared to find some things of concern and perhaps the truly hair-curling.  What I discovered was a bit of both: a very ordinary and normal life of faith surrounding the dusty core of a 7th century barbarism, dusted off and polished up for a new life in the Pacific Northwest.  This strange mix was all captured on camera and helpfully uploaded to the internet by Imam Wassim Fayed, a Sammamish Mosque trustee who holds regular workshops at the center.  He is also one of the founding members of the Sammamish Muslim Association.

Holy Week, holy Shariah? Part 1

Posted: April 18, 2011

Like most Americans have done since our republic's inception, this Holy Week millions of us across the country will commemorate the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But what concerns me in America is not only the growing disdain for Christian sentiment but also the increasing spread of Shariah law.

There's no mystery that radical Islamists intend to use the freedoms in our Constitution to expand the influence of Shariah law. But, still, too many Americans don't know or understand how it threatens the very fabrics of our republic. So I've decided to do a series on how Shariah is seeping into American society.

First, let me categorically state that I'm not an Islamaphobe. I welcome the plurality of religions in America and am a firm believer in the First Amendment. But just as our religious freedom is secured in the Bill of Rights, so is our freedom of speech to share even our religious concerns.

Brazil school shooter linked to Islamic groups (pics)

Murderer linked to islamist groups / Assassino ligado a grupos islâmicos
Thanks to Guzmán Moscardó

A scrapbook found at Wellington Menezes de Oliveira´s home, who on last Thursday has murdered 12 students in a school at Realengo neighbourhood, Rio de Janeiro, points he belonged or has links to a radical islamist group.

In the manuscripts, Wellington revealed belonging to an extremist group, said he passed at least 4 hours reading the Koran, sacred book for islamists, displayed fascinated by terrorist acts and quotes two foreigners, Abdul and Phillip, representatives of the organization in Rio. “When I was introduced to them I revealed everything, I was very accepted and there was a great delight”, wrote Wellington, who, in another stretch, shows the intention of visiting islamic countries, like Egypt and Malasya. Wellington´s body, who has suicided when he was caught up by the police during the killing at school, continues at Rio´s mortuary and could be buried by the State if anyone require it. The five adoptive brothers are scared about the possibility of being lynched if they show up publicly and don´t want to perform the funeral.

Thus, the neighbors of the house where the shooter lived are very scared, because strangers have been vandalizing the residence and properties around.

Interfaith prayer vigil at Islamic Center of America

The Interfaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit will convene an interfaith prayer vigil and silent procession at the Islamic Center of America at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 21, to "affirm our commitment as a community to unity, harmony and civil discourse."

The April 21 ceremony was planned after a Michigan-based extremist group announced plans to demonstrate in Dearborn on Friday, April 22.  That group has since cancelled its plans, but other demonstrations are rumored to be in the works.

"We are inviting clergy and lay people from the metropolitan Detroit region to stand together in the spirit of cooperation and harmony, the essential basis of this great country," according to Robert Bruttell, chair of the Interfaith Leadership Council.

"We are calling on people to reject fear and intolerance, and to embrace the idea of doing to others as we would have them do to us."

The April 21 program will include prayers and short statements from religious leaders representing a wide range of faith traditions throughout the metropolitan region, and a silent procession outside the mosque.

Earlier this month, the Interfaith Leadership Council launched a petition, "A Simple Affirmation for Our Community" which received more than 900 signatures online in its first week, and hundreds more on paper copies being circulated among religious congregations and civic groups throughout the region.

More signatures will be collected during the April 21 ceremony.  Those who want to sign the petition online can find it here

The Islamic Center of America is located at 19500 Ford Rd. in Dearborn.

Translated from the Islamic Fatwa Council of Jerusalem, 10 February 2009:

Q: What is the expiation for he who insults the religion, and if he has performed the hajj, does he need to perform it (again)?
Date: 10 February 2009
A: In the name of Allah the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah.
Whoever insults Allah, the angels, and the religion, has apostatized from Islam, and become an infidel -- (agreed).
The apostate is the legally competent one who voluntarily withdraws from Islam, whether he openly declares his infidelity, or utters something which makes him an infidel, or does something which makes him an infidel. In this case, this man has uttered something which makes him an infidel! For he insulted the religion, or in other words mocked, ridiculed, and belittled it. We take this from Islam -- (agreed).
The ruling on the apostate is for him to seek forgiveness within three days, and if not he is killed, according to the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him): "The blood of a Muslim man is not permissible except under one of three conditions:  1) he commits adultery, 2) he takes an innocent life, or 3) he abandons his religion and separates himself from the community" (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim from Ibn Mas'ud).
Let us beware, servants of Almighty Allah, to not be careless or reckless in our words and deeds, and to fear Almighty Allah in that which we say. For it is a great disaster for insults to the religion and the like to be found on our tongues, rather than remembrance and thanks for Almighty Allah.
He who apostatizes and then repents and returns to Islam, the scholars agree that his act (of performing the hajj) is not futile, for he has repented. (His hajj) remains (in effect) and does not need to be repeated.

Iran: ‘U.S. Power Grid Prime Target for Cyber Attack’

Reports indicate a recent meeting of Iran's cyber warfare leaders concluded that our grids should be their primary target. They have also been discussing retaliation for Stuxnet.

April 20, 2011 - by 'Reza Kahlili'

On April 16, the head of Iranian cyberwarfare within Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, Gholam Reza Jalali, officially blamed the U.S. and Israel for Stuxnet — a mysterious computer worm that has harmed Iran’s nuclear program. The Guard’s officials have repeatedly warned of retaliation: both for the assassinations of the Iranian nuclear scientists inside Iran, which they called acts of espionage, and for Stuxnet.

Reports from Iran indicate that during a recent meeting among Iran’s Revolutionary Guard commanders and Iranian scientists, America’s vulnerabilities for a cyber attack were discussed. They concluded that the U.S. power grids represent the best opportunity for such attacks, as more U.S. utilities are moving their control systems to the Internet and using smart-grid technology.

CAIR’s Strong-Arm Tactics in the Cradle of Liberty

The latest victim of the Council on American-Islamic Relations is a Philadelphia-based libertarian writer who fears for his life.

April 20, 2011 - by Hillel Zaremba

Aaron Proctor, a Philadelphia-based libertarian writer, can count himself the latest victim of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), an organization that ironically claims to work for civil rights.

Proctor, a colorful commentator for the Philadelphia version of Examiner.com, had the temerity to investigate CAIR’s dubious background in connection with its Philadelphia branch’s planned fundraising dinner on March 12 at a municipal facility, the Springfield Country Club. CAIR-PA invited Johari Abdul-Malik to deliver one of the evening’s main addresses. Abdul-Malik works at the Dar al-Hijrah Islamic Center, which has the distinction of being the former base for an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and for Anwar al-Awlaki, mentor to Fort Hood murderer Nidal Malik Hasan and underwear bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.

In keeping with these associations, Abdul-Malik declared in 2001:
I am gonna teach you now. You can blow up bridges, but you cannot kill people who are innocent on their way to work. You can blow up power supplies … the water supply; you can do all forms of sabotage and let the world know that we are doing it like this because they have a respect for the lives of innocent people.

US tells Palestinians to forget about unilateral statehood

US tells Palestinians to forget about unilateral statehood
The Obama Administration on Tuesday signaled the Palestinian Authority that it will oppose efforts to unilaterally establish a Palestinian state at the UN in September.

The Palestinians and their allies plan to call on the UN to formally recognize an independent Palestinian state in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip, with Jerusalem as its capital. They have threatened to follow through with this plan in September unless Israel offers compelling concessions before then.

The Americans are expected to veto the unilateral establishment of Palestine in the UN Security Council, but the motion is almost certain to pass in the General Assembly.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is confident that US President Barack Obama will eventually come around and that America, too, will support the birth of Palestine, even in the absence of a bilateral peace deal with Israel.

"We are counting on the words of US President Barack Obama who said his vision is to see a Palestinian state this coming September," Abbas said during a visit to Tunisia this week.

Dearborn, County Tell Court Terry Jones' Visit Too Dangerous, Costly

Florida Pastor Terry Jones' visit, Dearborn Police say, is too costly, and likely to incite violence or create a dangerous situation. Jones must appear in court before he can hold his planned demonstration in the city.

   patch
Controversial Florida Pastor Terry Jones must appear in court Thursday before he can hold his planned protest outside the nation's largest mosque Friday in Dearborn.
In an April 15 court filing against Jones, who has burned a Quran and incited violence in the past, Dearborn Police Department officials detailed their concerns. They say the Florida pastor’s plans for a demonstration at Dearborn’s Islamic Center of America this Friday would be logistically and fiscally impossible, and put lives at stake.

King Demands Answers from Holder on Decision Not to Prosecute CAIR, its Co-Founder, and other Unindicted Co-Conspirators in Holy Land Foundation Case

Apr 18, 2011

Washington, D.C. (Monday, April 18, 2011) – U.S. Rep. Peter T. King (R-NY), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, has demanded an explanation from Attorney General Eric Holder as to why he decided not to prosecute the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), its co-founder Omar Ahmad, and other named unindicted co-conspirators in the Hamas terror finance case, United States v. Holy Land Foundation.  The other unindicted co-conspirators include the Islamic Society of North America and the North American Islamic Trust.

In a letter to Holder, King wrote:  “I have been reliably informed that  the decision not to seek indictments of the Council on American Islamic Relations (“CAIR”) and its co-founder Omar Ahmad, the Islamic Society of North America (“ISNA”), and the North American Islamic Trust (“NAIT”), was usurped by high-ranking officials at Department of Justice headquarters over the vehement and stated objections of special agents and supervisors of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as the prosecutors at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Dallas, who had investigated and successfully prosecuted the Holy Land Foundation case.  Their opposition to this decision raises serious doubt that the decision not to prosecute was a valid exercise of prosecutorial discretion.”

The signed letter is available at the Committee on Homeland Security website.

The text of the letter sent to Attorney General Holder follows:
