Quran-Burning Pastor Terry Jones Requests Jury Trial in Dearborn Court

Florida Pastor Terry Jones was in court in Dearborn Thursday afternoon. He asked for a jury trial to see whether he needed a peace bond to proceed with a demonstration he planned in the city Friday. Stay tuned for updates.

Florida Pastor Terry Jones and his associate Wayne Sapp appeared at the 19th District Court Thursday afternoon in Dearborn to decide whether he will be legally permitted to demonstrate in the city on Good Friday.

At the 3 p.m. hearing, Judge Mark Somers gave Jones and Sapp the option to have the need for a peace bond determined by either a jury, or by judge. Both men indicated that they would prefer a jury trial.

Because of the late timeframe of the Thursday hearing and need to select a jury, the trial will not be held until 9 a.m. Friday morning.

Judge Somers, however, noted that "justice delayed is justice denied," and that he would make every effort to have a decision made in his court before 5 p.m. Friday–the time Jones had originally planned to demonstrate.

Sean Hannity, Keith Ellison Have Fiery Clash About Muslims (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post  Jack Mirkinson  First Posted: 04/21/11 09:14 AM ET Updated: 04/21/11 10:13 AM
Hannity Ellison

The conversation touched on several very contentious issues, such as the proposed Islamic center near Ground Zero, the 9/11 attacks and the notion that America is "at war" with "radical Islam." Ellison, the first Muslim to be elected to Congress, and Hannity spent much of their time talking over each other.

The debate lasted around 15 minutes, but the most fiery clashes came in the second half. Hannity asked if Ellison thought the Nation of Islam should be "investigated" by the government. "I'm more of a constitutionalist, Sean," Ellison said. "You and I must agree that we wouldn't just investigate a group because we don't agree with them. We gotta have more than that. You'd agree with that, right? Wouldn't you agree with that?"

"Relax," Hannity said, adding that it seemed "reasonable" in light of 9/11 to investigate certain groups in the country.

Lampedusa refugees #11

The initial burst of the current wave of migrations northwards across the Mediterranean began in January after an uprising in Tunisia forced the ouster of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. In the wake of the fighting, refugees fleeing violence and destitution crossed the narrow straits between the Tunisian coast and the islands of Lampedusa, Malta, Pantelleria, and Sicily.

After the Egyptian crisis broke and the first unrest appeared in Libya, a more general flow of refugees began. Refugees moved both east and west, depending on the intensity of the fighting in a given location, and accumulated in refugee camps near the Egyptian-Libyan border or the Libyan-Tunisian border. The largest camps are in Tunisia just across the border from Libya, where hundreds of thousands of displaced persons are being held. Many of them are planning to cross the Mediterranean to what they hope will be a better life in Italy.

Where Does NBC’s Andrea Mitchell Get Her News? ‘Al Jazeera’

Posted on April 20, 2011 at 1:34pm by Jonathon M. Seidl Jonathon M. Seidl

NBC reporter and MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell sat down with The Atlantic to talk about where she gets her news. Would you be surprised that she gets it from the same place as Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and the White House? Would you be surprised if that “place” was Al Jazeera?
The is what Mitchell, NBC’s chief foreign affairs correspondent, admitted:
I think Al-Jazeera has become indispensable. There’s a big difference between Al-Jazeera overseas and Al-Jazeera English but they are clearly part of the story and I rely on them very heavily, as does the State Department. I think the channel ought to be available more widely in the U.S. given the work they’ve been doing in Tunisia, Libya and certainly Egypt.
Indispensable? Al Jazeera? The network that loves to love the Muslim Brotherhood?

Illinois: Muslim teen ran away to avoid arranged marriage (and ‘honor’ killing?)

Here we go again. Hat tip Gates of Vienna

Missing Skokie Teen Zaineb Chaudhary Found Safe:

Chicago – Police said missing Skokie teen Zaineb Chaudhary, 16, was found Wednesday.
She was turned into the Skokie Police Department at 2 a.m. by an unidentified individual. Police said the person saw a report of her disappearance on FOX Chicago News and convinced Chaudhary to turn herself in.

Police said she was in good health but “tired emotionally and physically.” They believe she stayed in the local area, though she may have made plans to leave Chicago and go to California.
When she was reported missing, there was a concern she ran away fearing her dad was setting up an arranged marriage with someone in her native Pakistan.

Chaudhary was in the care of social services Wednesday and undergoing extensive counseling. Police could not say when she would be turned over to her parents, but did say her health and wellbeing were their top concern.

Sharia Trumps Constitution in Michigan: Terry Jones Denied Permit to Rally, Could Face Arrest

Dearborn, Michigan has become a sharia enclave much like those populating many European countries. The city of Dearborn, Michigan denied a permit yesterday for Pastor Terry Jones' planned protest outside the Islamic Center of America on Good Friday. Islamic supremacists were handed a victory for their violent intimidation and threats.

What happened to freedom of assembly, freedom of speech, freedom of expression? Terry Jones is prohibited from rallying in Michigan for fear of Islamic violence. Is that how far down the sharia rabbit hole we have gone. Why is it anytime American law comes into conflict with Islamic law, it is American law that has to give way?

How dare they prohibit this march? Nazis marched in Skokie. Americans better stand up to this enforced sharia. The idea that Muslims in America would get violent because of Jones speaks volumes about Muslims in America, does it not? Why don't we don't see Muslims taking to the streets every time there is an honor killing, or church bombing, or act of jihad, jihad piracy, forced marriage, child slavery,  -- where are they?

Obama, Let My People Go

3,000 years after the Jewish people left Egyptian slavery bound for the land of Israel, their freedom remains as elusive as ever. A new Pharaoh adjacent not to the Nile, but the Potomac, looks out from the White House and issues his decrees regarding the Jews.
No sooner does a Jew build a house in Jerusalem, than one of the Pharaoh's flunkies rushes to condemn him for it. A week before Passover, one of those flunkies announced that the administration was both "deeply concerned" and "very worried" about new Jewish homes in Jerusalem. A day later Jewish families hoping to be able to live in their own holy city were greeted with the announcement that approval for more housing had been suspended to avoid offending the little man with the big ears in the White House.

The Obama Administration has spent more time condemning housing in Jerusalem, than genocide in the Sudan. If some parts of Israel are constantly being shelled by terrorists, the Gilo neighborhood of Jerusalem is constantly being shelled by administration spokesmen. Year after year, the people of an overcrowded city are frustrated in their efforts to find a place to live, when some White House or State Department flunky finishes sipping his coffee, gets up in front of a microphone and expresses the grave concern of his master that a new condominium might go up in a place where Jews had been living long before the religion of Obama's grandmother was even a twinkle in her mad prophet's eye.

Arabs attack Jewish shepherd, then complain to police

Arabs attack Jewish shepherd, then complain to police
Israel National News on Wednesday reported an attack on a Jewish shepherd in Samaria that characterizes the absurd situation that the Jewish residents of the so-called "West Bank" often find themselves in.

The incident began early Tuesday morning, when a shepherd from the small Jewish village of Givat Ronen was tending his sheep on a hilltop not far from the Palestinian town of Nablus.

According to the report, a group of Arab men suddenly approached and attacked the Jewish man, prompting him to call for help. A number of neighbors from Givat Ronen immediately answered the call and fought back against the Arab attackers.

The fatwa below addresses the issue of why a Muslim man may marry a non-Muslim woman (Jew or Christian), but a Muslim woman may not marry a non-Muslim man.

The fatwa quotes numerous highly-respected Muslim imams, both classical and modern (including Yusuf al-Qaradawi and al-Azhar University), and really makes it difficult to doubt the fact that Islam, or at least mainstream Islam, does indeed forbid the Muslim woman from marrying a non-Muslim. It also lays out the reasons for why this is so, the most important of which, in my opinion, is Islam's view that the man has wilaya wa-qiwama (guardianship and trusteeship) over his wife, and that the "wife must obey her husband." Since Islam must be always be supreme--or in the words of Shaykh al-Qaradawi below, al-Islam y'alu wala y'ali 'alayhi (Islam is exalted over all, and nothing is exalted above it)--therefore the Muslim woman cannot be in a state of inferiority, i.e. married, to an infidel.

This is also interesting in the context of a fatwa from an officially-sponsored Kuwaiti journal which I translated and posted a couple of days ago, which says that, "Among the clearest evidences of Islam's tolerance and guaranteeing of freedom of conscience, is its permitting marriage to a non-Muslim woman from the People of the Book." If that's so, then this fatwa would seem to contain one of the clearest evidences of Islam's supremacist and intolerant attitudes.

Translated from the Islamic Fatwa Council of Jerusalem, 17 February 2009:
Q: What is the ruling on a Muslim woman marrying a non-Muslim man?
Date: 17 February 2009
A: In the name of Allah the most merciful.
Praise be to the Lord of the worlds, and peace and blessings be upon our lord Muhammad, and upon his family and companions.
Allah Almighty said: "Wed not idolatresses till they believe; for lo! a believing bondwoman is better than an idolatress though she please you; and give not your daughters in marriage to idolaters till they believe, for lo! a believing slave is better than an idolater though he please you. These invite unto the Fire, and Allah inviteth unto the Garden, and unto forgiveness by His grace, and expoundeth His revelations to mankind that haply they may remember" [Qur'an 2:221].
This noble verse indicates that it is forbidden for a Muslim woman to marry a non-Muslim man. There is no disagreement on this from any Qur'anic commentators, and it is agreed to by all scholars. The meaning of non-Muslim here includes any infidel or polytheist, whether he is an idolater, Magi, or one of the People of the Book.
The following are a few statements from scholars (on the topic):
Imam al-Qurtubi said: "The Muslim woman may not be married to a polytheist. The ummah is in agreement that the polytheist may in no way have sexual relations with a Muslim woman, for that would be a shame for Islam.
Imam al-Razi said: "There is no disagreement here that the meaning here is all--or rather, all non-Muslims. (It means) that the believing woman is not permitted to be married to the infidel under any circumstance, and this includes all different types of infidels."
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The verse was revealed which made Muslim women forbidden for polytheists, including the idolaters--as Allah Almighty said: [Qur'an 2:221]. According to the Qur'an, this also includes polytheists from the People of the Book, due to the severing of guardianship between Muslims and polytheists [i.e. polytheists may not have guardianship over Muslims]. The people have not differed on this point, as far as I know."
Imam al-Kasani said: "It is not permissible to marry a Muslim woman to an infidel, due to the saying of the Most High: "...and give not your daughters in marriage to idolaters till they believe..." [Qur'an 2:221]. This is because if a Muslim woman is given in marriage to an infidel, there is fear that the Muslim woman might fall into unbelief, for the husband will invite her to his religion. Women generally follow men; they are influenced by them in their actions, and follow their authority in matters of religion. This is indicated in the end of the verse of the saying of the Most High: "These invite unto the fire." Wherefore they invite the believing women to unbelief, and inviting to unbelief is the same as inviting to the fire, for unbelief requires the fire. Therefore since marrying a Muslim woman to an infidel is a cause which invites to that which is forbidden, it is also forbidden. Although the text stipulates polytheists, since the cause for this is the invitation to the fire, it can be generalized to include infidels. All (scholars) are in agreement in generalizing the ruling, since the cause (for the ruling) is generalized. So it is not permissible for a Muslim woman to marry a man from the People of the Book, just as it is not permissible to marry her to an idolater or a Magi. For the shari'ah prohibits the guardianship of the infidels over the believers, according to the saying of the Most High: "And never will Allah grant to the unbelievers a way (to triumphs) over the believers" [Qur'an 4:141]. For if an infidel were to marry a Muslim woman, he would be granted "a way (to triumph)" over her, and that is not permissible."
Imam Malik said: "Do you not see that it is not permissible under any circumstances for a Muslim woman to be married to a Christian or Jew? For if a Christian woman were married to a Christian man, and she converted to Islam, then she would be under his possession, as if she were in her 'idda. Even if a Christian began a marriage with a Muslim woman, the marriage was void."
Imam Ibn Jizzi said: "All scholars are in agreement that it is absolutely forbidden for an infidel to marry a Muslim woman."
Imam al-Shafi'i said: "It is not permitted for a Muslim woman to marry an infidel under any circumstance unless he converts to Islam, owing to the saying of the Almighty: "...and give not your daughters in marriage to idolaters till they believe..." [Qur'an 2:221], as well as His saying: "if ye ascertain that they are Believers, then send them not back to the Unbelievers. They are not lawful (wives) for the Unbelievers, nor are the (Unbelievers) lawful (husbands) for them" [Qur'an 60:10]." [...]
[Goes on to quote from Ibn Muflih, Ibn Qaddama, Ibn Hazm, Muhammad bin Abu-Bakr, and Dr. 'Abd-al-Karim al-Zaydan, all essentially agreeing with the previous quotes]
Shaykh Dr. Yusuf al-Qaradawi says:
"The Muslim woman is not given in marriage except to a Muslim, according to the saying of the Most High: "Wed not idolatresses till they believe," and then He says "...and give not your daughters in marriage to idolaters till they believe..." [Qur'an 2:221]. Then He made an exception, saying, "The food of the People of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them. (Lawful unto you in marriage) are (not only) chaste women who are believers, but chaste women among the People of the Book" [Qur'an 5:5]. Thus it is permitted to marry chaste women among the People of the Book, but it is not permissible for men (among the People of the Book) to marry Muslim women.
"This wisdom is this: The Muslim believes in all the messengers, including Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them). (He also believes in) all the books, including the Torah and the Gospel. On the other hand, the People of the Book only believe in their messengers and their books. Islam has permitted for the wife from the People of the Book who is married to a Muslim to go to her places of worship, such as the church or temple. On the other hand, the People of the Book do not permit the Muslim wife--if they had married her--to go to the mosque and manifest the rituals of Islam.
"And what's even more important:  Islam is exalted over all, and nothing is exalted above it. Marriage is guardianship and trusteeship. A Muslim man may be a guardian and a trustee over his wife from the People of the Book; however, a non-Muslim may not be a guardian and a trustee over a Muslim woman, for Almighty Allah said: "And never will Allah grant to the unbelievers a way (to triumphs) over the believers" [Qur'an 4:141]. The wife must obey her husband, and if a Muslim woman married a non-Muslim man, her obedience to him would conflict with her obedience to Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him).
"If perchance there is another hidden ruling which prohibits the marriage of a Muslim woman to a non-Muslim, Allah Almighty knows, for He knows everything which is good for His servants: "Does He not know, Who created? And He is the Knower of the subtleties, the Aware" [Qur'an 67:14].
"It is not for the believer to say anything of Allah, or His wisdom and knowledge, except: "We hear, and we obey: (We seek) Thy forgiveness, our Lord, and to Thee is the end of all journeys" [Qur'an 2:285]."
This comes from a fatwa from al-Azhar:
"It is true that Islam permits the Muslim man to marry a non-Muslim woman (Christian or Jewish), and does not permit a Muslim woman to marry a non-Muslim man. At first glance, this might seem like inequality. But if one understands the true reason for this, one ceases to wonder, and ceases to imagine that it is inequality. For Islam has a point of view on this which clarifies the wisdom behind it. All laws in Islam are based on wisdom and true benefit for all parties.
"Marriage in Islam is based on "love and mercy" and cohabitation. Islam seeks to build the family on sure foundations, which are guaranteed to perpetuate the marital relationship. Islam is also a religion which respects all of the previous divine religions, and makes faith in all of the previous prophets part and parcel of the Islamic creed. Therefore if a Muslim man is married to a Christian or Jewish woman, he is commanded to respect her creed. He is not permitted--from the Islamic point of view--to prevent her from practicing the rites of her religion, and going for that reason to her church or temple.
"Therefore Islam desires that the husband gives an element of respect to the creed and worship of his wife. This guarantees and protects the family from collapse... [ellipsis in original]
"However, if a non-Muslim man marries a Muslim woman, this element of respect for the wife's creed is lost. For the Muslim man believes in the previous religions, and believes in and respects the previous prophets of Allah. But the non-Muslim does not believe in the Prophet of Allah, and does not recognize him, but considers him a false prophet. He believes, usually, in all of the fabrications and lies rumored against Islam and its prophet, and other rumors. Even if the non-Muslim husband does not openly state this in front of his wife, she still lives under the stress of feeling the lack of respect from her husband toward her belief. This is an issue which is not helped merely by words of appeasement and courtesy, for it is an issue of principle. Mutual respect between the husband and wife is the foundation for the perpetuation of the marital relationship.
"Islam was being logical when it forbade the marriage of a Muslim man to a non-Muslim woman from a religion other than Christianity or Judaism, and for the same reason it forbade the marriage of a Muslim woman to a non-Muslim man.
"The Muslim does not believe in any religion except for the divine religions, and others are considered religions of men. For in that case reverence and respect toward the religion of the wife--to say nothing of courtesy--would be lost. This would adversely affect the marital relationship, and would not result in the "love and mercy" required in this relationship."
Signed by: Dr. Mahmud Hamdi Zaqzuq, Minister of Islamic Endowments and President of the Egyptian High Council for Islamic Affairs; Dr. Wahbat al-Zuhayli; Dr. Nasir Farid Wasil, professor of Islamic shari'ah at al-Azhar University and former Grand Mufti of Egypt; Shaykh Muhammad al-Ghazali; Dr. Muhammad Rafat 'Uthman, former dean of the College of Shari'a and Law at al-Azar, and member of the Islamic Research Academy; Islamic thinker Dr. Muhammad Salim al-'Awa; and Dr. Amir 'Abd-al-'Aziz.
From what has been presented, it has been made clear that marriage of a Muslim woman to a non-Muslim man, without exception, whether he is from the People of the Book or not, is forbidden, and such a marriage is not permitted, based on the words of scholars both ancient and modern. If such a marriage does exist, it must be annulled immediately.
Almighty Allah knows best.

US accuses Pakistan over militant links

AP – In this photo released by Inter Services
Public Relations, U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff …
ISLAMABAD – The top U.S. military officer accused Pakistan's spy agency on Wednesday of links to a powerful militant faction fighting in Afghanistan, and said that relationship was at the "heart" of tensions between Islamabad and Washington.

The comments by Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, are a sign that the U.S. is not stepping down in a bruising dispute with Pakistan in recent months that has threatened their vital if often uneasy alliance in the campaign against militants.

Mullen, who is visiting Pakistan, made the comments to local Geo TV in an interview ahead of a meeting with Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. The two men reportedly enjoy a good relationship, but Mullen said he would bring up the issue of the militant Haqqani network with him in talks about tensions between the two countries.

"Where I am not soft is on the heart of that discussion which is the Haqqani network very specifically," he said. "The Haqqani network very specifically facilitates and supports the Taliban who move in to Afghanistan to kill Americans."

Spencer: Egypt: Muslims Riot Over Appointment of Christian Governor

In FrontPage for Thursday I discuss the latest manifestation of the march toward Sharia in Egypt:
In the new modern, moderate, secular, democratic Egypt of the Arab Spring, Muslims in Qena are enraged and protesting because a Christian governor has been appointed for them. It was yet another indication that the Egypt that will emerge from this season of revolution and upheaval is much more likely to be an Islamic state than a secular democracy, no matter how much the mainstream media fantasizes about the latter.

The protests have been vehement, if not violent. Reuters reported Sunday that “thousands rallied outside the governor’s office in Qena and prevented employees from entering, blocked highways leading to the town and sat on a railway line into the province demanding that the appointment of Emad Mikhail be reversed.” A local resident added: “They started out by camping at the local government’s office. Then they set up a tent on the railroad tracks. They also tried to block the road and stopped buses to separate men and women passengers.” And “tensions were so high that the local Christian residents had to stay inside and couldn’t go to church to celebrate Palm Sunday.”

Reuters suggested that the protesters were angry about government corruption, claiming that the protesters were outraged because the last Christian governor in the area “left a negative impression of Christian officials,” but AP let the cat out of the bag on Monday when it noted that “many” of the protesters were “from the ultraconservative Salafi trend of Islam.”

For the mainstream media, one is “ultraconservative” for adhering to Islamic law and wanting to impose it on others, and likewise “ultraconservative” for resisting the imposition of that law. But anyway, why would “ultraconservative” Islamic supremacists be outraged over a Christian governor? Because Islamic law forbids non-Muslims to hold authority over Muslims. This is in accord with the Qur’anic command that Muslims fight the People of the Book – the Qur’an’s term for primarily Jews and Christians, until they “feel themselves subdued” (9:29)....

There is more.

TUNISIA: COUNTRY FEARS SPREAD OF FUNDAMENTALISM

20 April , 14:29

(ANSAmed) - TUNIS, APRIL 20 - Tunisia is fighting a political and ideological battle at the same time, about the State's secularity. Everybody seems to agree on the issue, at least in words, but there are some hardly visible developments that are reason for concern. It doesn't take much to get the attention and to worry most Tunisians - and not only the young people - who thought that everything would change for the better after the 'Jasmine revolution'. But now that are faced with the potential explosion of a form of Islam that does not seem to be moderate at all, with which the religious parties are flirting while they are making preparations for a long electoral season. A young man from the outskirts who created a group of other young people around him, speaking a language drenched in piety is even seen as a potential threat in the eyes of the entire country. The person in question is the self-proclaimed 'emir el Muminin'', meaning ''prince of believers'', who is active in the Ras Jedir region, nowadays well-known for its border crossing where hundreds of thousands of refugees from Libya entered the country, with all problems caused by this situation, including security and public order issues. People fear that the 'prince' wants to establish an emirate in this place, in Ben Gardane. It started a few days ago, when an artist who performed for the refugees to make them forget about their suffering for a while, was approached by a group of young bearded men. These men reproached the artist, saying that he should not try to make these people smile with all the suffering in the camps. It could have ended there, if these young men had not said that they had a leader, for whom the title 'emir' had been chosen. In Arabic 'emir' means commander, but the term has a different meaning in religious context, particularly if taken together with the term ''el Munimin'', the idea of a caliph and a caliphate. The problem in the eyes of many people is not the name of this group however, but its actions, especially in the early stages of the humanitarian emergency caused by the Libyan crisis. The members of the group, Ahl El Ber wal Khayriya -Kafilet Ennasr (''People of justice and charity - The caravan of victory''), have set up a formidable organisation, supplying meals to 600 refugees per day. That is a lot, considering that - at least on paper - they are only boys who have decided to set up a (so far unknown) organisation of volunteers. This form of assistance has awoken the interest of hundreds of refugees. Now people in Tunisia fear that this situation, with desperate and disillusioned people, could be a fertile ground for fundamentalism. (ANSAmed).

WikiLeaks papers shed light on Hizbollah's Israel plans

A series of diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks to Israeli newspapers have revealed previously unknown information about Hizbollah's capabilities and Israel's ties with the Gulf state of Bahrain.

According to one of four US embassy telegrams from November 2009, Israeli intelligence officials believed Hizbollah could launch up to 36,000 rockets across the border from Lebanon in the event of another war between the two.

The document, the result of a meeting involving American and Israeli officials, suggested that Hizbollah had planned for a "long" two-month conflict and intended to aim 100 missiles at Tel Aviv.

The author of the telegram said: "Hizbollah was preparing for a long conflict with Israel in which it hopes to launch a massive number of rockets at Israel per day.

The Missouri House of Representatives passed a bill today that bans the recognition of sharia law

4/20/2011

The Missouri House of Representatives passed a bill today that bans the recognition of sharia law in state courts. The bill does not specify sharia or any national law, but refers merely to “foreign” law. The fate of a similar bill in the state senate is uncertain. Missouri Muslims criticized the law, and urged people to learn more about sharia before condemning it.

In other news, a Turkish-German TV actress named Sila Sahin has caused outrage among her fellow Muslims by posing nude for the German edition of Playboy. She says that she did it to set an example for other Muslim women and to help liberate them from the oppressive strictures of Islam.
