Egypt urges US to back Palestinian state declaration

Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil al-Araby Nabil al-Araby's call is not without risks

The Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil al-Araby has urged the United States to support the declaration of an independent Palestinian state.

The call comes after the reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah brokered last week by Egypt.
Both Israel and the US have said they will not deal with Hamas, and have until now opposed a unilateral declaration of Palestinian statehood.

The statement marks yet another big shift in Egypt's foreign policy.

The new call marks a move away from Egypt's past compliance with the United States and Israel, which have strongly opposed the Palestinian authority's campaign to win backing for a unilateral declaration of statehood.

UK fatwa, Islam, suicide bombings
Sheikh Qadri says suicide bombings are against the tenets of Islam
CAIRO – A Britain-based Muslim scholar will issue a fatwa condemning suicide bombings as a brazen violation of peaceful Islamic tenets, an edict that is drawing a showering praise for helping fight home-grown terrorism.

“Today’s tragedy is that terrorists, murderers, mischief-mongers and rioters try to prove their criminal, rebellious, tyrannous, brutal and blasphemous activities as a right and a justified reaction to foreign aggression under the garb of defence of Islam and national interests,” Sheikh Tahir ul-Qadri writes in his fatwa cited by The Independent on Sunday, May 1.

“It can in no way be permissible to keep foreign delegates under unlawful custody and mirder them and other peaceful non-Muslim citizens in retaliation for interference, unjust activities and aggressive advances of their countries.

Turkish man released after allegedly stabbing ex-wife five times with a screwdriver

A woman narrowly escaped death after she was allegedly stabbed five times with a screwdriver by her ex-husband in Istanbul’s Maltepe district on Sunday, after being denied official protection. She is now recovering in hospital protected only by her family as the suspect walks free.

“The state could not protect me. The first time I made a complaint about my ex-husband, he did not appear in front of the prosecutor. I narrowly escaped death but he has been released. He carries a gun. He could easily kill me as I lie in my hospital bed. Still the state does nothing to protect me. Now I understand why women murders cannot be prevented,” said Filiz Akdoğan, 27, who is trying to recover from the horrific recent event.

Although she divorced her husband, Çoşkun Kara, 34, two years ago, she said he continues to harass her and even sends death threats.

WikiLeaks: Montreal mosque 'is a top Al Qaeda recruiting zone'

By Daily Mail Reporter
A mosque in Montreal has been ranked in the world’s top nine Al Qaeda recruiting zones and linked to a terror cell planning attacks on Los Angeles airport, new released documents claim.

The WikiLeaks files, written by U.S. military chiefs, list the Al Sunnah Al Nabawiah mosque among nine houses of prayer worldwide considered as a place ‘Al Qaeda members were recruited, facilitated or trained’.

The leaked ‘Matrix of Threat’ documents, designed in the early days of the Guantanamo detention centre to assist intelligence officials, rank the Canadian mosque alongside sites in Yemen, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Al Sunnah Al Nabawiah Mosque in Montreal is considered by the U.S. military to be among places where

Will the Muslim Brotherhood soon control Egypt's parliament?

The Muslim Brotherhood's new plans to contest 50 percent of Egypt's parliamentary seats in upcoming elections are sparking concern that it will impose its Islamist ideas on the population.

The Muslim Brotherhood’s new political party will field candidates in about half the parliamentary seats in Egypt’s first post-revolution elections, leaders announced Saturday.

After years of being banned from politics and persecuted by former President Hosni Mubarak, the official launch of the group’s Freedom and Justice Party was a historic moment.

Leaders portrayed the party as inclusive, saying Christians and women can join. In accordance with Egyptian law, the party is officially civil, not religious, and is independent from the group. Leaders also repeated an earlier pledge not to run a candidate in presidential elections.
